Emma L. Benson

Emma L. Benson was born May 2, 1922 in Walnut Grove, MN to Anna M. (Bergblom) and Charles M. Benson. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Walnut Grove. She has been a lifetime member of the church. She graduated from Walnut Grove High School in 1940. Following this education, she continued at Gustavus Adolphus College to earn a BA degree in Teaching. Later she attended Mankato State University for a BS degree in Counseling. She was an English teacher and librarian at Elmore, Plainview, and Jackson, MN High Schools. Emma counseled students at John Glenn Jr. High School in North St. Paul, MN for many years until her retirement. Continuing after her retirement she remained an active member of the education fraternity, Delta Kappa Gamma. She loved music, poetry, books, traveling, and textile weaving. She had “a way with the written word”.

Emma passed away April 16, 2010 at Ebenezer Ridges Care Center in Burnsville, MN at the age of 87 years, 11 months, and 14 days.

The loves of her life were the 16 neices and nephews of the Bolling, Carter, and Johnson families, all of whom survived her in addition to numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. Emma is survived by her sister, Ruth (Don) Johnson. Two sisters & their spouses, Edith & Charles Carter and Lucille & Dale Bolling preceded her in death, in addition to a nephew, Stephen Leigh Johnson.
