Bruns age 83 of Walnut Grove passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Springfield after an extended battle with Alzheimer’s.  Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 8 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Walnut Grove.  Visitation is 4:00-7:00 p.m. Friday at the Walnut Grove Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.  Interment is in Slayton Memorial Gardens.  Online condolences may be sent at www.stephensfuneralservice.com.  Stephens Funeral Service – Walnut Grove Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Dick R. Bruns, one of triplets, born August 13, 1930 in Slayton, Minnesota to Henry and Jesse (Ebbinga) Bruns.  They were the first triplets born in Slayton.  He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.  Dick attended school at Fulda.  He grew up on the farm, and at age 12 went to work with his uncle.  On September 1, 1951 he married Lucille Marlette at Currie Presbyterian Church.  Dick was proud of his service to his country in the Korean War, serving from July 1952 to June 1953.  He worked at the Currie lumber yard for a few years, at Revere Milling Company, and as head school custodian in Walnut Grove from 1981 to 1996.  Dick was a very patient man.  He was quick to laugh and slow to anger.  Dick was a loyal “Chevy man”.  He had a warm smile and positive demeanor.  Dick never missed a family function.  He loved his family especially his grandchildren and was a caregiver to all his family.  Dick was a very dedicated and hard worker, working many trades.  He was always willing to help his family.  Dick was a member of the Walnut Grove American Legion and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1963 when they moved to Walnut Grove.  He enjoyed farming, camping, and vacationing.  He loved hunting with his brothers in his younger years and dancing after he met Lucille.

Dick is survived by his wife Lucille of 63 years; children: Carol (Ron) Bannick of St. Peter, Rich (Joanne) of Hinckley, Don of Belle Plaine, and Cari (Jason) Haug of Brandon, SD; grandchildren: Alysha, Nathan, Emily, & Meghan; Mike, Mark, & Katie; Matt, Ben, & Keshia; Alex, Carter, & Taylor; and 9 great grandchildren.  He is also survived by his brother Harry (Shirley) Bruns of Marshall, sister Fannie Bruns of Fulda, sister-in-law Fern Bruns of Worthington, and many other relatives and friends.  He is preceded in death by his parents, son David Scott Bruns, siblings Rena, Ted, Grace, Pete, Hank, Reiner, Andy, triplets Jesse and George, and Leona.

  1. I am so sorry to hear about Dick’s death. I have many fond memories of Dick from when I spent time at your house with Cari as well as at school. Your family is in my prayers.

  3. Sometimes it is hard to find the words that truly express how sorry we are for your loss.

    Dick was a corner stone in the Bruns family. With his wife Lucille by his side they were the couple that made family reunions complete.
    With Dick’s passing we are left with fond memories.

  4. My sympathy goes out to all of you. It would be very difficult to find a janitor as cheerful and proud of his neat work as Dick. I have many loving memories of him. It is too cold to strike out by myself so I am sorry, but I won’t be coming to his funeral. My thoughts will be there.
