Mabel S. Eng, age 95, of Walnut Grove, passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at Valley View Manor in Lamberton. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at English Lutheran Church in Walnut Grove. 

Visitation is one hour prior to services at the church.  Private family burial will be in the Westbrook Cemetery at a later time.   Stephens Funeral Service – Walnut Grove Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. 

Mabel S. Madson was born March 24, 1916 on the family farm near Westbrook, Minnesota to Christ and Marie (Larson) Madson.  She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Westbrook and confirmed there on June 8, 1930 by Pastor Estram.  Mabel graduated from Westbrook High School on June 1, 1934.  On October 24, 1934 she was united in marriage to Elmer Eng in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  Together they lived on a farm near Avoca for two years, and then moved to the farm north of Walnut Grove where she helped work the farm and raise chickens.  Elmer passed away on September 30, 1958.  Mabel continued living on the farm until 1966 when she moved into town.  She worked at Dorothy’s Café for 22 years until her retirement in 1981.  Mabel was widely known for making dill pickles.  She was a member of English Lutheran Church where she served on the WELCA and was secretary for Sunday school for many years.  Mabel enjoyed gardening and working on the farm, crocheting, knitting, sewing, and making patchwork quilts.  She also loved spending time with her daughter.

Mabel Eng is survived by her daughter Brenda (Loren) Mentjes of Walnut Grove and several nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Mads, Carl, and Otto, and sisters Hannah Wilkins, Anna Mischke, Christine Nelson and Ella Hutchinson.
