Marjorie Bakken age 100 of Walnut Grove passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 27, 2013 at the Westbrook Good Samaritan Care Center while surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 30 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, rural Walnut Grove. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Walnut Grove Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. Interment is in the church cemetery. Stephens Funeral Service – Walnut Grove Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Marjorie (Knudson) Bakken was born November 14, 1912 in Westbrook Township, Cottonwood County, Minnesota to Melvin and Amanda (Skow) Knudson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. When Marjorie was 4 years old, her mother passed away and Marjorie and her brother Darrell went to live with their aunt and uncle, Emma and Albert Kleven. Marjorie married Kenneth Bakken, and she worked hard alongside him on the farm until they retired and moved into town in 1971. Marjorie was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church where she was always very active. She volunteered at the Wilder Museum and held a lifetime membership. She enjoyed quilting and playing cards at Mealsite and Country View. Marjorie was a talented baker; she made countless batches of chocolate chip cookies, lefse, and chocolate doughnuts. She will forever be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.
Marjorie is survived by her children: Dennis (Evie) of Madison Lake, John (Sharon) of Walnut Grove, Judeen (Frank) Erickson of Westbrook, Marleen (Jim) Johnson of Northfield, and Ron (Roberta) of Walnut Grove; 12 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 9 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers: Lowell Knudson, Bruce (Maureen) Knudson, and Alvin (Dorothy) Kleven; sister-in-law Eleanor Bakken of Lamberton; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Kenneth, brothers: Kenneth, Darrell, and Elroy Knudson, and several in-laws.
We are so sorry to hear of “Grandma” Bakkens passing. She was such a wonderful lady and always made everyone feel so special. It’s really no wonder everyone called her “Grandma” and loved her like their own Grandma. She will be greatly missed!

Our sympathy to the Bakken family on the passing of Marjorie. We so enjoyed her as our neighbor when she lived in Walnut Grove. She was such a friendly, caring person and enjoyed her family and friends.
We were so sorry to hear of Marjorie’s passing. She was a grand lady. I always enjoyed chatting with her. We still have several of the lovely quilts that she made. She is in our thoughts and prayers as are you all.
Gramma Margie was a one of kind. What a wonderful lady and a wonderful life she had. Whenever she came to get her hair done she always asked for a hug and a kiss! Blessed be her memories and sympathies to all the family.
