Leona Sumption age 94 of Ruthton passed away Tuesday, July 17 at Divine Providence Health Center in Ivanhoe, after a courageous battle with Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a rare form of cancer. 

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Peace Lutheran Church in Ruthton.  Visitation is 4:30 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Tyler Area Funeral Home with a prayer service at 6:45 p.m. 

Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.  Interment is in Peace Lutheran Cemetery.  Stephens Funeral Service – Tyler Area Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Leona Elsie Augusta (Renken) Sumption was born in Alcester, South Dakota on January 18, 1918 and baptized on January 31, 1918.  When she was 6 weeks old, she moved with her parents Gerhard and Elsie (Hemmelrick) Renken to North Dakota to homestead a farm on the prairie.  She lived through the depression on that farm.  She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 11, 1933.  She graduated from Freda High School as class Salutatorian in Freda, North Dakota in 1936.  After graduation, she was employed in the local cafés and hotels in both Carson and Flasher, North Dakota.  She moved to Ontario, California and was employed as a nanny and did domestic work.  She moved back to Minnesota and met Willard Sumption.  They were united in marriage on April 5, 1939.  They lived and farmed near Ruthton, Minnesota.  As a farmer’s wife, she was active outside with farm activities.  Leona was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church ELCA, Mark Circle, and Senior Citizens.  She helped with the Altar Guild and taught Sunday school at Peace Lutheran Church for 15 years.  Willard passed away on May 6, 1986.  Leona moved to Ruthton, Minnesota in May 1988.  She loved to travel.  She has traveled to all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Israel, cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean, and to seven countries in Europe.

She is survived by her daughters: Donna (Lew) Weeks from White, SD, Leann (Joel) Ebben from Sherwood, WI, Jane Baumgard from Marshall, MN; grandchildren: Joni (John) Domine from Tracy, MN, Connie (Paul) Matzner from Stickney, SD, Gary Weeks from Pipestone, MN, Kevin (Heather) Ebben from New Brighton, MN, Gregory Ebben from Kansas City, MO, Annalisa (Jeff) Funk from Bellevue, NE, and Alynn (Angie) Baumgard from Lafayette, MN; great-grandchildren: Travis (Josie) Domine from Tracy, MN, Jill Grimmett from Tracy, MN, Ashlee (Dusty Sykora) Domine from Avoca, MN, Benjamin and Hannah Matzner from Stickney, SD, Jordan Weeks from Delano, MN, Kaley Walker from Sioux Falls, SD, Wyatt Weeks from Pipestone, MN, Hunter, Cole, and Aleksa Ebben from New Brighton, MN, Levi and Lucas Baumgard from Lafayette, MN; great-great-grandchildren: Riley Grimmett of Tracy, MN, Evan and JacLyn Domine from Tracy, MN, Carson Sykora from Avoca, MN, Krissa and Peyton Walker from Sioux Falls, SD; nieces; nephews; cousins; and a host of good and caring friends.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Willard, parents, Gerhard and Elsie Renken, brothers Leroy, Lloyd, Loren, Leo, and sister Viola Nelson.
