Caroline Vera Thomssen was born September 16, 1918 to Henry and Emilie (Garmatz) Koehne on the homestead farm in Fountain Prairie Township south of Lake Benton.  She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lake Benton.  She grew up on the farm and attended District #38 country school.  Caroline met the love of her life while dancing at the Showboat Ballroom.  Harold Thomssen and Caroline Koehne eloped on November 19, 1938 in Flandreau, South Dakota.  They lived in Holland before moving to Casanovia, where their son Ronald was born.  They then moved to their farm north of Lake Benton where their daughter Sharon was born, living there for 43 years before retiring and moving into Lake Benton.  Caroline enjoyed baking, crafts, family get-to-gathers and playing cards – (but she wanted to win them all!)  She worked for Region 8 for 24 years.  In 2003 she moved to Benton Valley Manor and enjoyed apartment living.

She is lovingly remembered by daughter Sharon (Eugene) Stuefen of Sioux Falls, SD; daughter-in-law Judy Thomssen of Lake Benton; grandchildren: Karla (Charles) Berg of Maple Grove, Cory Stuefen of Joplin, MO, and Will (Heidi) Thomssen of Lake Benton; great grandchildren: Dylan and McKenna Berg, Heather, Emily, and Derek Stuefen, and Cody, Garritt, and Travers Thomssen; sister-in-law Evelyn Koehne; nieces, nephews and friends.  She is preceded in death by her parents Henry and Emilie Koehne,  husband Harold in July 1993, son Ronald in January 2003,  great granddaughter Amanda Jo,  brothers Ben Koehne and Henry Koehne Jr; and sisters Olga Rouge, Clara Petersen, Augusta Willert, Leona DeBoer, and Margaret Vick.
