David Norman

David Norman

David NormanDavid Rowland Norman, age 79 of Redwood Falls, passed away Saturday, December 15, 2018 at Seasons Hospice House due to complications of an infection. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2pm Saturday, December 22 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Private family burial will be held at a later date.  Stephens Funeral Service – Redwood Valley Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

David Rowland Norman became a citizen of Planet Earth June 18, 1939. He was born to Rowland and Gertrude (Branum) Norman. David became the “baby” of the family joining his sister Ann Rachel and brother Richard. His siblings were his mentors and friends as he tried to keep up with them and their activities. David was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran Faith and suffered a “drug” problem in his growing up years. He was DRUG to church, Sunday school, confirmation, Ladies Aid, Lutheran Brotherhood, Luther League Senior High Bible Study, Green Lake Bible Camp and any activity that Saron Lutheran Church presented. What seemed like a burden to David at the time, was a fabulous start in his Christian life and was a blessing that he always appreciated. David started school in a one room country school but in the second grade he went to town school in Granite Falls. He graduated in 1957. David entered St. Olaf College in September 1957 and graduated in June of 1961. He then started a teaching career which lasted 35 years. His teaching career was in the towns of Storden, Jackson, and Redwood Falls. David’s father always commented about his boys, “born in the west, educated in the east, and never leaving the state of Minnesota.” David earned a master’s degree in education from East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas. This was the only time he broke the barrier of Minnesota. David was united in marriage to Kaye Hanson in August of 1984. He retired from teaching in 1996. In retirement David did “stuff.” He and Kaye helped with Meals on Wheels, church committees, church council, lecturing, ushering, helping in the kitchen for funerals, and played a lot of golf. David continued rope-making with the machine he received from his father. It was always a thrill for him to use the rope maker that was purchased by his grandfather and used by his father, uncles and neighbors to make ropes needed for their farming duties. The rope making skill is a legacy that his son Scott, grandchildren, and nephews will continue as a tribute to the past. David loved life, his wife Kaye, children, grandchildren, and all people on Planet Earth. Some people were puzzles to him, but he had a love for all mankind.

David is survived by his wife Kaye (Hanson) Norman; brother Richard Norman of Rochester; brother-in-law Allard Stevens of Hanley Falls, son Scott Norman and wife Sarah (Arthur) Norman of Lino Lakes; daughter Beret Norman and husband Seth Thomas of Boise, ID; Grandchildren Bryce & Anja Norman of Lino Lakes, Solveig Norman and Niko Thomas of Boise, ID; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his infant daughter Stacey, parents Gertrude and Rowland Norman, sister Ann Stevens, and sister-in-law Gloria Norman.

Blessed be his memory, UM YA YA

He was an inspiring teacher for soo many of us! His passion of teaching was infectious! My deepest condolences to his family!

  3. As our gym teacher, Mr Norman was clear and firm and, above all, he was fair–this combination of qualities in a person is not at all automatic. I hold in my heart’s memory a clear sense of his calm and positive presence in our congregation, with a twinkle of humor. I’m honored to know his family.

  4. A wonderful and funny man. Had the privilege to be one of his students in Redwood Falls. My thoughts are with him and his family.

  7. We loved checking in Mr. & Mrs. Norman at Redwood Falls Golf Club. Dave would always have a smile on his face as he asked for an ice water for him and one for Kay. We will miss him; God bless you!

  8. Great friend and neighbor, teacher, mentor, role model. Our families spent many fun times together in Jackson often making the easy 2 block trek between our homes. Fun conversations and always Dave’s sometimes, but mostly not, subtle humor. I know he’d have some snickering comment right now if he were reading this. Those many vivid many memories will long endure. Dave is probably on Heaven’s ‘drug’ force and delivering ‘Meals on Wings’ with jokes for dessert.

Thoughts and prayers to The Norma Family

  9. I transferred to St. Olaf as an upper class man, Dave was one of the first people I met on the Ole football team. Dave was a hard worker and a Crunching tackler. He was a great team mate. I always appreciated his down home country humor and the great smile after telling a Sven and Ole joke. I also learned that it was best not to ask him about his rope braiding since that led to a 20 minute lecture and a fist full of ropes when you left. I was blessed to know this wonderful man and be called a friend. I wish we could have got a few more golf games in. Love and prayers for Kaye and family.

  10. Dave was a teacher of mine, and a football and track coach at Jackson High School in the 70s. I great teacher, a good man, and I am sorry to hear of his passing. He made those difficult high school years more bearable. No one did better scouting reports for football than Dave. He had all of the relevant statistics and all of the trends down to a fine science. He made football a game of smarts, rather than just might. I will miss him and remember him for the fine role he played for so many of us.

  11. Sympathy to Kaye and family. David always had A smile and friendly greeting. A great classmate! Jud Palmer, GFHS 57, Go Kilowatts.

  12. A gentleman and a scholar. Will miss your presence on the golf course and your kind greeting as we bumped into each other in the parking lot or on the course. Dave and Kay could always find the golf balls that I couldn’t. God bless and be with you on that big course in the sky. Will miss you.

  13. Kaye and family….we wish to share our sincere sympathy to you and your family. We are glad to have known Dave.
