Mae A. Kleven was born February 3, 1924 to Thor and Lydia (Holste) Kleven in Westbrook, Minnesota.  She considered Westbrook her home for the majority of her long life.  Mae was baptized and later confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, a place that held special meaning throughout her life.  She graduated from Westbrook High School in 1941 and from St. Olaf College in 1945.  Mae also attended schooling in Norway and a summer Fulbright program in Brazil.  Her chosen profession of teaching was accomplished with terms in Butterfield, Slayton, Pipestone and Northfield.  Even after retirement, Mae involved herself in education by sharing her hobby of stamp-collecting activities with elementary school students.  Mae enjoyed her interest in travel by visiting all 50 states as well as many foreign countries.  One of her favorite tours was to South Africa.  She usually returned home from her trips with souvenirs and photos from the areas she visited and shared her adventures with friends.  Mae’s other interests included reading, volunteering, and history (she was a charter member of the Westbrook Heritage House).

Mae is survived by her brother Dale Kleven; nephew Lee (Ann) Kleven; niece Jan (Brad) Cook all of Bloomington; and many other loving family and friends.  She is preceded in death by her parents Thor and Lydia (Holste) Kleven, infant sister, sister-in-law Ruby Kleven, and niece Debra (Kleven) Schuster.

What a talented woman was Mae Kleven! She enriched many lives through her teaching, and sharing of her talents.
One summer (long ago when I was in jr. high school) she was my Shetek Lutheran Bible Camp counselor. Mae served her church and community in many ways. Sincere sympathy to her brother, Dale, and family.

Mae was in our travel group and was always taking notes and pictures
so she could share her learning with others on her return.
We were fortunate to have had such a kind talented person on our trips.
    Our sympathy to her family.
