Gordon Donald Eichner was born June 27, 1943 to Johnny and Madelyn (Carey) Eichner in Heron Lake, MN. He is the first of four children and the only son born to this family. Gordy was baptized and confirmed into the Methodist faith and attended church regularly for much of his life at Amo United Methodist Church where he later served on the cemetery board. He attended and graduated from Storden High School in 1961. As a young man, Gordy “grew up” quickly with the loss of his sister and a few years later, a fatal car accident involving his father, uncle and friend that left Johnny seriously injured. Gordy took on many of the responsibilities of the farm in these circumstances. He enlisted in the Army National Guard at 19 years of age and served 22 years in the 1-125 Field Artillery of Windom before joining the Westbrook American Legion. On September 7, 1968 he married Christie Lee Boetel and into this union four strong daughters were born: Tracey, Tamara, Tonya and Tiffany. Gordy made sure his girls were provided a strong moral compass in his living example; integrity, earning your keep, and “who you are when no one is looking matters” were common themes. It was important to him these young women were taught how to swim after he experienced a near drowning incident in his teens. He took satisfaction in donating blood whenever he could after being the first to arrive at the deadly car accident mentioned previously. Gordy served his community by joining the Westbrook Lions Club and being a school bus driver which he enjoyed in his later years and helped to keep him “young”. Farming was in Gordy’s blood and he drove semi with a livestock trailer to support his family while farming in the 70s and 80s. You could find him at the Farmers Union fair booth for which he served as Treasurer. He greatly enjoyed talking about farming and keeping up with current farming practices in the community. He was a former member of the National Farmers Organization as well. Gordy was a social person and enjoyed playing cards, baseball, bowling, polka and country western music, and watching his grandkids’ sporting events. His favorite church event was Easter Sunrise service followed by pancakes and sausage.
Gordon is survived by his four daughters and their families: Tracey (Rod) Will of Milford, IA; Tammy (Dwight) Damman of Newton, IA; Tonya Eichner of Tracy, MN; Tiffany (Dan) Warner of Walnut Grove, MN; grandchildren: Jacklyn (Matt) Shea, Dalton Taylor, Chelsey (Kailer) Stevenson, Dustin (Amanda) Taylor, Jennifer (Davin) Wilson, Gregory (Chloe) Will, Brooke Schneider, Karson Schneider, Arianna Warner, Grace Warner and Elsie Warner; great-grandchildren: Sophie, Parker, and Colbey Shea; Jaxson, Rylee, Lillee, and Linken Stevenson; and Grayson Schneider. He is also survived by one sister Audrey (Rick) Kulseth and several nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. Gordy is preceded in death by his parents, two of his siblings: Beatty Eichner and Patricia (Eichner) Eagen, and one grandson Clayton Will.
