Richard “Dick” Lee Gewerth was born January 19, 1961 in rural Redwood County to Joseph and Helen (Kohls) Gewerth. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Morgan. Dick attended St. Michael’s Catholic School through the eighth grade and then attended and graduated from Morgan High School in 1979. He continued his education by attending Jackson Community College, earning a degree in Farm Management. On August 8, 1981, Richard and Cheryl Swoboda were joined in marriage at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church. Their union was blessed with four children. Most recently Dick worked for Tersteeg’s Farm. Dick was a member and involved in many organizations: Knights of Columbus, Lions Club, a school board member of Morton & Redwood Valley, Redwood Area Foundation, Archer Oil, Producers Hybrid, Blandin Leadership, a life-time blood donor of the Red Cross, 4-H leader, both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, and assisted in several other community organizations. He was a devoted member within his faith community, singing in the choirs and serving as a Fourth Degree Knight at St. Michael’s and later at St. Catherine’s Catholic Churches. All of Dick’s community involvements have not gone entirely unnoticed. In 2008, he was awarded the “Hidden Gem” award by the people of his community to honor him for years of dedicated service. Dick enjoyed playing games of cards and drinking coffee. He found happiness in being a husband, dad and friend, but his greatest joy was being a Grandpa. Dick is survived by his wife Cheryl Gewerth of Morton; children: Carrie (Rob) Tostenrud of Redwood Falls, Russell (Beki) Gewerth of Morgan and Travis Gewerth of Mankato; grandchildren: Lillian, Lewis and Micah Tostenrud; and by many family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, and son Shawn. |
