District 48, a rural school, is where she received her elementary education and then attended Springfield Public High School where she graduated on May 31, 1935. Two years later she became a student at Mankato State Teachers College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree on July 19, 1946. She taught school for 39 years: 15 years in District #55 – a rural school south of Springfield, 7 years at District #104 – Seaforth Public School, and 17 years at District #640 – Wabasso Public School. She retired from teaching in 1981. She thoroughly enjoyed her students and they were the highlight of her life. On May 28, 1955 Alta married Walter Fixsen at her parent’s home in Springfield, Minnesota. During their married life they lived on a farm east of Seaforth in Redwood County. After her husband’s death on October 8, 2000, she continued to live on the farm until September 29, 2001 at which time she moved to Redwood Falls, Minnesota. Prior to her death, she was a resident of the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Redwood Falls.
Surviving her is her sister, Lila, and husband Glen Hoffman, of Redwood Falls; two sisters-in-law, Norma Schweim of Sun City, AZ, and Lillian Schweim of Redwood Falls; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Walter, two brothers Erich (1996) and Wilbert (2003), and twin sisters Erma (1927) and Norma (1956). Blessed be her memory. |
