Marvel Elsie Gierke was born along with twin Marvin on May 9, 1914 on the family farm in Sibley County, Minnesota to Theodore and Emilie Amalie (Fenske) Gierke. She received her education in the New Ulm and Gaylord public schools. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was confirmed in the German language at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Marvel was a waitress at the Weneeda Café and worked at a dry cleaning shop in her younger years. She was united in marriage to Laurence Carey on August 20, 1939. After marriage they made their home in Westbrook where Laurence and his brother Albert ran Carey Brothers Trucking. During WWII they moved to California where Laurence worked for Kaiser Shipyards. After the war, they moved back to Minnesota and ran a dry cleaning shop in Ortonville for a few years and then moved to Westbrook and ran a dry cleaning and Laundromat until their retirement. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church. Marvel was ordained and elder on January 17, 1960. While serving as elder she especially liked to visit, along with the pastors, the shut-ins of the church. Marvel would like to be remembered as a person who lived her Christian faith daily. She enjoyed crocheting baby Afghans and traveling.
