Vernon Carl Cohrs
Vernon Carl Cohrs, age 81 of rural Westbrook passed away Saturday, November 27, 2010 at the Murray County Hospice Center in Slayton, MN due to complications of a stroke.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 2 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Westbrook.
Visitation will be held 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Westbrook Funeral Home with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Interment is in the Westbrook Cemetery. The Westbrook Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Vernon Carl Cohrs was born April 15, 1929 in Dovray Township, Minnesota to Karl C. Cohrs and Dena H. (Defries) Cohrs. He was baptized at the American Lutheran Church in Dovray. He attended District 31 Country School through the 8th grade. He was confirmed at Grace (Faith) Lutheran Church in Westbrook. He worked on the family farm and for area farmers and also did custom corn shelling. On September 15, 1950, Vernon joined the United States Marine Corps and served as Staff Sgt. during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged on June 19th, 1953. He was united in marriage to Betty M. Anderson on June 11, 1955 at Louisburg, MN. They made their home on the Cohrs family farm in Dovray Township. Vernon spent his life enjoying his feeder cattle and cash grain farming operation. Vernon was a lifetime member of the Dovray Legion and Westbrook VFW proudly serving on the Color Guard. He served 15 years on the Westbrook School Board; 6 years on the Westbrook Elevator Board; and 6 years on Trinity Lutheran Church Council. Vernon enjoyed playing cards with friends and his grandchildren. He always enjoyed pets and loved his cat and dog. Vernon enjoyed watching Westerns, fishing, camping, and traveling. Vernon and Betty traveled on a Farm Tour of Europe in 1983 and also over the years to Canada and most states in the US.
Vernon is survived by his wife Betty of 55 years; his children: Patricia J. (Tom) White of Westbrook, MN, Cindy C. Dogan of Plymouth, MN, Vickie L. (Kenneth) Gleason of Owatonna, MN, Robin L. (Carl) Mergen of Dodge Center, MN, and Kirby C. Cohrs of Westbrook, MN. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren: Jesse (Jeana) White, Lucas White, Dena Gleason, Cody (Brianne) White, Amy (Gleason) (Chris) Tacheny, Carla Dogan, Cole White, Paul Dogan, Travis Timmerman, Dylan Timmerman, Martin Gleason, Maureen Gleason, and Taylor Timmerman; and 3 great-grandsons: Nathanial, Cohen, and Carlin White. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Marvel Cohrs, and his grandson Andrew Gleason.
