David G. Svendsen age 67 of Brookings, SD passed away unexpectedly Friday, July 11, 2014 at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Services will be held at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 15 at the Tyler Area Funeral Home. Visitation will be 2:00-5:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Stephens Funeral Service – Tyler Area Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
David G. Svendsen was born January 5, 1947 in Des Moines, Iowa to Helmar and Alice Svendsen. David went to Belmond School in his early years and attended the Church of Christ in Clarion, IA, where he was a member and was baptized. He then graduated from Ventura High School in 1965. Upon his graduation, he entered the United States Army where he did a one year tour in Vietnam and he was honorably discharged in 1968. On May 31, 1969 David was united in marriage to Kathy LaCour in Forest City, Iowa. Their marriage was blessed with one daughter Michelle Svendsen Nelson. David spent many years working in the agricultural related industry. He retired in 2006 due to ill health. He was a lifetime member of the VFW in Brookings, SD Post 2118. David loved to spend time with family and friends along with fishing and hunting. His most enjoyable past time was attending his granddaughters, Alexis and Allyson’s sporting and school events.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kathy of Brookings, SD; daughter Michelle Nelson and husband Shawn of Tyler, MN; 2 grandchildren Alexis and Allyson Nelson; sister Linda Wibberg and husband Dick of St Petersburg, FL; 2 nieces Elizabeth and Monique Chador of St. Petersburg, FL; sister-in-law Susan Doty and Husband Don of Wayzata, MN; aunt Harriet Carlson of Willmar, MN; aunt and uncle Florence and Kenny Kriens of Thorton, Iowa; and many other cousins from Minnesota and Iowa.
