LaVanche GrossmanLaVanche (Becker) Grossman, age 97, of Lamberton, formerly of Chokio, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2012 at Valley View Nursing Home in Lamberton.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Sanborn.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Interment is in Sanborn Cemetery. Stephens Funeral Service – Redwood Valley Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
LaVanche Grossman was born September 14, 1914 in Sanborn, Minnesota to Frank and Elizabeth (Shonka) Becker. She and her twin brother, LaMoine (Mike) Becker, were baptized and confirmed at the Springfield Catholic Church. LaVanche attended school at Sanborn’s public school. She and LaMoine provided the music for all activities at the high school. LaVanche played piano and saxophone. After high school, LaVanche attended the College of St. Theresa in Winona, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree. After graduation, LaVanche went on to teach school in Chokio, LeCenter, Tyler, Winnebago, and New Ulm public schools. She taught business and music for ten years. After teaching, LaVanche returned to school. She attended the Minneapolis School of Business and began working for National Cash Register for the next eighteen years. LaVanche married Joseph Grossman in 1976 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Chokio. They made their home in Chokio where Joseph operated a grocery store. She took up golf at the age of 62. LaVanche enjoyed playing cards, golfing, fishing, traveling, visiting relatives and friends, and partaking in activities at the Chokio Senior Center. LaVanche and Joe were “snow birds” for years.
LaVanche is survived by her niece Roxanne (Becker) Soll of Minnetrista and nephew Richard (Donna) Becker of Glenwood. She is preceded in death by her parents Frank and Elizabeth (Shonka) Becker, husband Joseph Grossman, twin brother LaMoine Becker, and sister-in-law Ruth Kolset Becker.
