Laverna Julich page 92 of Tracy, formerly of Milroy, passed away Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls after a massive heart attack.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church in Tracy.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the Tracy Area Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Interment is in the Tracy City Cemetery. The Tracy Area Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Laverna was born August 26, 1918 at home in Westline Township, Redwood County, Minnesota to Anton & Clara (Paul) Gilb. She was baptized September 22, 1918, and confirmed March 29, 1931 both at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Milroy. Laverna attended Milroy public school, graduating in 1936. She received an Associate Degree and later a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Education from Mankato State Teacher’s College. She was an elementary teacher for 31 years, teaching in a rural school, North Redwood, Lamberton, Redwood Falls, and Milroy. She is a member of Retired Educators Association of Minnesota. On June 26, 1951, Laverna was united in marriage to Otto Julich. They lived on a farm in Gales Township near the Milroy community, until moving to Tracy in 1985. She was a Sunday school teacher at St. John’s Lutheran Church for many years, beginning when she was just 13 years old. Laverna was also a member of Faith Lutheran Church where she was active in its L.W.M.L. until it closed. She was then a member of Zion Lutheran Church. In her early years of retirement in Tracy, she volunteered with Meals on Wheels, Food Shelf and Friends of the Library. Laverna enjoyed gardening, reading and needlecrafting.
Laverna is survived by her daughter Paula Minse and husband Roland of Eagle Lake; sister Doris (Gordon) Hemish of Tracy; brother Clarence Gilb of Marshall; brother in law Leo Anderson of Redwood Falls; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Otto, and sisters Marjorie Anderson and Mabel Gilb.
