Bernard “Bernie” Gunar Holm was born April 12, 1928 to Albin and Erna (Tomshin) Holm in Garvin, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Bernie attended a local country school and later graduated from Tracy High School in 1946. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in WWII as a Navy electrician. On February 8, 1947 he married his high school sweetheart, Jeannette “Netter” Nelson, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Richmond, California, while Bernie was in the service. After his honorable discharge in 1948, Bernie returned to Tracy and began working at his mother-in-law’s business, Tracy Floral. The couple later bought the business in 1960 and then sold it in 1995. Bernie held many positions in the Tracy Community. He was on the police commission, Mayor, the Tracy city commission and the Tracy city cemetery commission and was cemetery superintendent. In 1950, Bernie joined the Tracy Fire Department for 26 years, where he held many titles over the years, such as Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, Assistant Chief and fire training officer. Bernie worked at many places while living in Tracy, such as the Tracy Bottling Company, owned Tracy Floral, owned fire extinguisher sales business for over 50 years, and later worked part-time at Wal-mart in Marshall. Over the years he was also a member of the Wheels Across the Prairie board, Faith Lutheran and later Zion Lutheran Church, and the Tracy American Legion, where he was commander for three years. As a very involved community member, Bernie loved to see the Tracy community grow, enjoyed gardening at his home, and spending time with his family.
Bernard is survived by his daughter Marsha (Doug) Zisler of Lakeville; son Michael (Jeannie) Holm of Jordan; grandchildren: Matt (Rachel) Zisler, Brett (Lindsey) Zisler, Tami Decker, Mark (Tammy) Holm, Aaron Holm (Laura), and Danielle Holm; 9 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild and many other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Jeannette, son Bradley, brothers Eugene, Larry and Jerry; sister-in-law Doris Kitterman, brothers-in-law Lowell Kitterman and Strann Nelson.
