Bernard “Bernie” Lawrence Schaffran, age 67, of Walnut Grove, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2024 at Our House Hospice of Murray County in Slayton, after a 6 ½ year battle with cancer. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 15, 2024 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Walnut Grove and one hour prior to the service at the church. Visitation will be 4:00-6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 14 at the Walnut Grove Funeral Home. Interment will be at a later date in the Johnsonville Township Cemetery. Stephens Funeral Service – Walnut Grove Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Bernard “Bernie” Lawrence Schaffran was born April 3, 1957 to Donald and Pauline (Johnson) Schaffran in Springfield, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at Johnsonville Lutheran Church and graduated from Tracy High School. After completing school, Bernie followed in his father’s footsteps in his love for farming. He continued this love of farming throughout his lifetime. He loved his family and friends and the time they spent together. Bernie had many lifetime friends that he cherished and considered family. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his horses, his dog Dixie, and most recently his goats. Bernie’s true passion was farming; the planting, watching the crops grow and the harvest.

Bernie is survived by his siblings: Marilyn (Paul) Enstad, Donna (Dan) Quaas, Lynn (Tom) Hansen, Lori (Steve) Kay and Sharon (Dean) Baker; special friend Kim Fults; many nieces & nephews and great nieces & nephews; and many friends. He is greeted in heaven by his parents, grandparents and various friends.
