Anna Elizabeth “Liz” or “Lizzie” (Bakke) Steen was born August 11, 1926 to Oscar and Gunhild (Kjolo-Pedersen) Bakke in Westbrook Township, Cottonwood County, MN. She was baptized at Amo Lutheran Church and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Storden. Growing up, Liz and her siblings often played on the windmill on their farm. She attended District 58 school for 8 years and graduated from Storden High School in 1943. In high school, Liz participated in pole vaulting. After high school, she went to Omaha to work in the Glen T. Martin Bomber plant. She returned to Westbrook to work at the bakery and café. On August 10, 1946, Elizabeth was united in marriage to Herbert Steen. She helped on the farm, and later worked in Windom at Fingerhut, and then in Westbrook at the egg plant. In their younger years, Liz and Herb loved snowmobiling and fishing up north. Herb had a stroke in the fall of 1982 and Liz took care of him until his passing in December of 1991. Liz enjoyed dancing, making homemade chicken & dumplings, buns, and rolls. She loved socializing with a strong cup of coffee. Her laugh was contagious. Liz was a member of Rose Hill Lutheran Church and later Grace Lutheran Church, and she was active with the quilting group. She faithfully walked several miles every day around the section. Liz loved her Bunco and Extension groups, and watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their school events.
Elizabeth is survived by her children: Jerry (Pam) Steen, Jim (Lanie) Steen, Judy (Scott) Schoborg, Jane Olsem (Doug Daniels); grandchildren: Amy Jeter, Heidi (Jay) Hafner, Jason (Katie) Steen, Seth (Satoko) Steen, Jonathon (Leslie) Steen; great-grandchildren: Javon Jeter, Eva, Zoe & Vaughn Hafner, Halle & Brooke Steen, and Karen & Noah Steen; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Herb, and siblings: Agnes, Peder, Effie, Marie, Ida, and 2 sisters in infancy.
