He graduated from Redwood Falls High School in 1946, and furthered his education at Iowa State University, earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Agronomy. John then enlisted in the US Air Force in the spring of 1951. He served his country stateside during the Korean War as a fighter pilot, trained in flying F86 Sabrejets. He achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant. John married the love of his life, Sue Ann Robson, on December 22, 1952 in St. Louis, Missouri. Together, they went where the Air Force stationed them until John’s honorable discharge in 1955. John formed many bonds with fellow servicemen which became lifelong friendships. He and Sue attended many Air Force reunions and sincerely valued those relationships. Following John’s service in the military, the young family made their home near Redwood Falls, where John began operating the family’s farm. He actively farmed alongside his son and grandson until 2020. Founded in 1886, the farm later achieved the Century Farm award. For a time, in addition to farming, John was a substitute teacher at the Redwood Falls High School. John valued serving his community and it was evident through the many organizations in which he was active. He was a township officer, faithful donor to the Bloodmobile, member of the Minnesota Farm Bureau and Central Livestock Association and served on the school board for several terms. In 2004, John was honored to be inducted into the Redwood Area Schools’ Hall of Fame. He enjoyed music and attended high school band and choir concerts as well as the Redwood Concert Series for many years. John was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church serving as an elder and singing over 70 years in the church choir. John received much enjoyment from playing Cribbage with friends and grandchildren. He planted large gardens and eagerly shared produce, especially asparagus, with neighbors and friends.
