I knew Steve for many years, but got to know him best when I would see him at the Courthouse in Marshall once or twice a week as he was transporting prisoners over from the jail for court hearings. There was always a lot of "hallway time" on those days, and you got to know those in the "morning breakfast club" (as we all called those attending the the first AM sessions of court) better than you otherwise would have. Steve was a pretty straightforward guy; low key, with touches of humor here and there. He got along OK with everyone; even the prisoners, who often had no love for a Sheriff's Office uniform, treated him with respect and he returned the favor by treating them as human beings and not trash off the streets. He was good public servant for that and his military service, and an even better person and family man.
