Donald Peterson
Donald Peterson, age 93, of rural Dovray passed away Monday, February 13, 2012 surrounded by family at Our House of Murray County in Slayton.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Dovray.
Visitation is 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday at the Westbrook Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Interment is in Our Savior’s Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials will be given to Hospice of Murray County, American Cancer Society, and Feed the Children Ministry. Stephens Funeral Service – Westbrook Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Donald Leon Peterson was born September 23, 1918 on the family farm to Charles and Ludema (Elliott) Peterson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. Don attended country school District 14 and Walnut Grove High School through the tenth grade. He joined the US Army in 1942 where he earned the rank of Corporal. He was a truck driver light 345 and earned the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Motor Vehicle Drivers Badge. After his honorable discharge in 1945, Don returned home to help run the family farm with his brother Chester. On August 31, 1958, Don was united in marriage to Roselle “Sally” (Overton) Burt in Dovray, MN. They lived in Dovray for 4-1/2 years and then moved to a farm in Holly Township where he farmed until his retirement. He continued to live on the farm until November of 2011, when he became a resident at Our House, Hospice of Murray County. Don was a member of the Dovray American Legion and the Westbrook VFW. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Dovray. Don enjoyed fishing, flowers, traveling and watching the deer come through his yard. He enjoyed growing and eating fresh tomatoes and eating out with friends.
Don is survived by nieces: Ludema Kassel, Jeane Carter, Joyce Severson, Patricia Beierman, Edee Hunt, and Betty Waters; nephews: Vernon Hollingsworth, Richard Peterson, David Peterson, and Gary Peterson; special friend Stella Cohrs; and many great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife Sally; brothers Chester, Carl, William, and Ernie; sister Helen Hollingsworth; niece Joane Schmalz; nephews Chester Hollingsworth, Leonard Hollingsworth, and Les Peterson; step son-in-law Gerald Burt; and other relatives
