Alice May Maas, age 104, of Tracy, passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Prairie View Health Care Center in Tracy. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at English Lutheran Church, Walnut Grove, Minnesota, livestreamed on the church’s YouTube page, and with a lunch following. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Private interment will occur at a later date. Stephens Funeral Service – Walnut Grove Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Alice was born August 1, 1921, to Walter and Ida (Christensen) Andersen in rural Morgan. Her parents purchased and moved to a farm located in Johnsonville Township, Redwood County, in 1924. Alice attended elementary school in rural District 59 and graduated from Walnut Grove High School in 1940. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Johnsonville (closed in 2012), and was confirmed there. Alice married Arthur (Art) Maas on December 21, 1941, at Trinity. They lived on her parents’ farm, later purchasing it and raising their four children, Ronald, Judy, Diane, and Bruce, there.

Alice was known for her tatting, quilting, knitting, crocheting, sewing, and special patching skills. She was a crossword puzzle whiz, expert word finder, and enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and bingo. Alice also enjoyed gardening, canning (especially grape jelly from grapes grown on the farm), baking, and working side by side with Art on the farm and in the dairy barn. She was active in her church, serving the Church Council, Ladies Aid, Sunday School, and Confirmation. She also was a 4-H Leader, participated in Women’s Extension groups, and attended many of her children and grandchildren’s school and church activities.  Alice always showed much love and helpfulness to her family and friends!

Alice is survived by her daughter Judy (Thomas) Micke, of Delano: son Bruce (Maydra) Maas, of Walnut Grove; daughter-in-law Judy Maas, of Whittier, California; son-in-law Douglas Halstenson, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; grandchildren: Jerald (Beth) Micke, Jason Micke, Jennifer (Jerry) Smit, Jolene Halstenson (Tammy Chick), Jacob (Gentle) Halstenson, Jared (Kari) Maas, and Jonna Maas (Adam Schrader); eight great-grandchildren: Erika and Erin Micke, Chloe and Gavin Smit, and Juliana, Britton, Maverick, and Monroe Maas; and several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Alice is preceded in death by her husband Arthur (June 2016), son Ronald (June 2024), daughter Diane Halstenson (February 2023), infant grandson Justin Maas (March 1986), and sister Cora Steffen (May 2024).

Note: Thank you to Steve Lohmann for constructing Alice’s urn.
