Crystal was born October 23, 1967 at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, VA to Curtis Norman Marshall and Joan Marie (Owens) Marshall.
Crystal always carried a special love for her Virginia family and the place where her story began. She treasured her relationships with her family in Virginia. Time spent together created cherished memories, including one of her favorite Virginia traditions – enjoying butter drenched crab, a simple pleasure that brought her happiness and connected her to her roots.
Crystal attended school in Colonial Beach, VA and Douglas, Wyoming where she graduated from Douglas High School. She continued her education at Willmar Technical College, earning her Medical Assistant certificate and beginning a path of caring for others.
The most cherished chapters of Crystal’s life began when she met the love of her life and her best friend, Scott. Their relationship grew into a lifelong partnership, and Scott proposed to Crystal at the Hermann the German Monument in New Ulm, Minnesota. Scott and Crystal were married at the New Avon Salem Church on October 18, 1986.
Crystal and Scott shared a marriage built on faith, love, commitment and devotion. Scott was not only her husband, but her best friend and companion. Their marriage is a true partnership – two people who became deeply connected, supporting and caring for each other through all of life’s joys and challenges. Their life is a beautiful example of a devoted and faithful marriage.
Together Crystal and Scott built a life centered around love, family, hard work, and commitment. They were blessed with 5 children; Lindsey, Joshua, Jordan, Brooke and Rebecca. Crystal was blessed with grandchildren who brought her immeasurable joy. Being a mother and grandmother was one of the greatest gifts of her life, and she treasured every moment spent celebrating, supporting, and loving them.
Crystal began working at Sawvell Seed in Clements and through hard work, dedication, and commitment, she and Scott became owners. She took great pride in the business and enjoyed working alongside Scott and helping him on the farm throughout her life. She was a valued part of the agricultural community.
Crystal found joy in the simple and meaningful things in life. She loved gardening, canning and making the best food for the people she loved. She had a special gift for making every holiday, birthday, and interaction feel meaningful. She was often the first to check in, to remember birthdays, make plans and remind others that they mattered. Crystal loved horses, barrel racing, and her cats. She enjoyed collecting vintage Pyrex, antiques and collected belt buckles and glass ware with her father-in-law Vilo. Creating memories and celebrating unique treasures together was important to her.
Crystal had a natural talent for numbers and managing details. She was dependable, organized and took pride in doing things well. Helping others came naturally to her, and she consistently put the needs of others before her own. For several years, Crystal battled thyroid cancer. Despite chronic pain, nausea, fatigue and losing her ability to speak, she faced each challenge with extraordinary courage and grace. She navigated those hardships heroically and never complained. Even during her own struggles, Crystal continued to focus on caring for the people she loved, offering kindness, encouragement, and support.
Crystal will be remembered for her loving heart, her devotion to Scott and her family, her compassion for others, her strength through adversity, her love of animals, her appreciation for treasured memories and her ability to make every person feel valued and loved.
Crystal is preceded in death by her beloved son Joshua Dahmes, her mother Joan Vinich, her stepfather Robert Vinich, her grandparents John Stanley Owens and Mary Burnley Owens, her uncle James “Bobby” Owens, her brother James Childers, her father- and mother-in-law Vilo and Joan Dahmes, and her grandfather George Curtis Marshall.
Crystal is survived by her devoted husband Scott Alan Dahmes; children: Lindsey (Jose) Zandonadi, Jordan Dahmes, Brooke Dahmes, and Rebecca (Gabriel) Schumacher; grandchildren: Camila, Maximus, Everly, Gabriella, Lincoln, Burnley and one on the way; father and stepmother Curtis and Mary Marshall; aunts: Marge Owens and Burnley “Pill” Landing: siblings: Carolyn (Richard) Steinruck, Curtis Marshall, Amy Segars, Lisa Childers, Nina (Lee) Brett, Matt (Shannon) Childers, and John (Melba) Childers; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Crystal’s legacy is one of love, faith, courage, generosity and devotion. She showed those around her what it means to love deeply, serve selflessly, and face life’s challenges with strength. Her final moments reflected the way she lived her life – surrounded by family and deeply loving the people who meant the most to her.
