Kevin C. “KC” Scharmer was born August 18, 1958, in Hutchinson, Minnesota to Sylvan and Donalean (Weckop) Scharmer and grew up in Buffalo Lake. During his senior year at Buffalo Lake High School, KC was seriously injured in a car accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. After graduation, he studied Mechanical Engineering at Southwest State University in Marshall. Living in the Twin Cities in the 1980s, KC attended the Minneapolis School of Computer Aided Drafting and worked at Northern Telecom. Through the Courage Center, KC learned to downhill ski and joined its handicapped ski team as a mono skier. KC and Gretchen Klosterman lived in buildings across from one another. They met at the swimming pool where Gretchen’s son Jasen would dive for his ring. They began dating, and the rest is history. They married on May 21, 1988, at Irving Park in St. Paul, and became a family of three. In 1992 they settled in Garvin. KC was working at Mountain Power Hydraulics in Mountain Lake, where he worked until his retirement a few years ago, when they found their first cabin on Lake Shetek. In 2005 they moved to Storden; three years later they bought another cabin on the lake. KC never let his disability get him down. He loved life and treasured his cabin on Lake Shetek where he spent many hours fishing from his motorized kayak. He also enjoyed building model railroads. His mechanical engineering degree served him well as he drafted, tinkered and fixed anything and everything.
KC is survived by his wife of 38 years, Gretchen; step-son Jasen White of Marshall; granddaughter Angelica White of Minneapolis; mother Donalean Scharmer of Prairie du Chien WI; and siblings: Steve (Rhonda) Scharmer of Winona, Barbara (Fred) Barlow of Hutchinson; and many other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his father Sylvan Scharmer, and infant brother Robert.
