Dorothy Marie Parsons age 94 of Redwood Falls  passed away Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Parkview Home in Belview.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church in Redwood Falls.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Redwood Valley Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.  Interment will be held at a later date in the Echo Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Redwood Area Hospice or Parkview Home in Belview.  Stephens Funeral Service – Redwood Valley Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

 

Dorothy Marie Parsons was born November 26, 1916 in Jackson County to Ernest & Marie Hummel.  She attended country schools in Jackson County and Petersburg, and high school in Jackson, MN.  Dorothy was baptized in the Lutheran Church as a girl.  When they moved to the home farm they joined the Presbyterian Church in Vesta and transferred to Redwood Falls when moving there.  On October 6, 1935 she married John Leonard Parsons in Albert Lea, MN.  Prior to her marriage to John she lived in various farm sites in Jackson County and in 1940 moved to the home farm in rural Echo.  They lived there until 1971 when John retired due to poor health, and then moved to the Dan Holmberg farm in rural Vesta.  In 1976 they moved to Redwood Falls.  John passed away in 1977 and Dorothy remained in her home until 1997 when she moved into an apartment.  In November of 2004 she entered the Parkview Nursing Home in Belview and remained there until her death.  Dorothy was a hard worker all her life until poor health limited her activities in later years.   She enjoyed walking beans and picking rocks and always maintained a large garden.  She was always involved with ladies groups in the church.  Dorothy was a township assessor for over 40 years working in Redwood and Yellow Medicine Counties.  Her hobbies included reading, jigsaw puzzles, watching news on TV, and especially quilting.  She completed over 40 quilts for family and friends.  She also enjoyed travel after John’s retirement.  Dorothy spent many hours listening to Elvis, her favorite performer.
She is survived by her son Doug (Ione) Parsons of Echo; grandsons: Scott of Echo, Paul of Wood lake, and David (Bonnie) of Wood Lake; great grandsons:  Maitland of Wood Lake, Mason of Echo, and Drew of Wood Lake; and great granddaughter Bailynn of Wood Lake.  She is preceded in death by her parents Ernest and Marie Hummel, husband John Parsons, sister Anna Anderson; brothers John, Ernest, Walter, Melvin “Bud”, Robert and Marvin Hummel; and special friend Myron Fuhr.
