Richard J. “Dick” Walter age 81 of Wabasso passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Wabasso. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the church with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Interment is in the Redwood Falls Cemetery. Stephens Funeral Service – Redwood Valley Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Dick Walter was born August 9, 1936 in Springfield, MN to John & Gertrude (Polack) Walter. He attended country school near Wabasso, and later Wabasso Public School. Dick helped farm with his dad. On February 1, 1958, Dick was united in marriage to Carol King in Redwood Falls. Dick operated a dairy farm for many years and later did custom forage chopping. He also worked for 15 years as a mechanic at Franta Implement in Wabasso, and worked at Teg’s Chevrolet. Dick also extracted valuable metals from recycling materials. He served eight years in the National Guard. Dick belonged to the 2-Cylinder Club in Redwood Falls and to the Wabasso Lions Club for many years. He enjoyed meeting with the Breakfast Club on Saturday mornings in Wabasso. Dick was an avid reader, and enjoyed collecting tractors, playing cards especially “Sheephead”, and stock car racing. He was a member of the bowling league. Dick enjoyed watching All Star Wrestling, Nascar, and Wheel of Fortune. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandkids.
Dick is survived by his wife Carol of 60 years; children: Scott (Betti) of Janesville, MN, Robert (Mary) of Alexandria, Tim (Ruth) of Montevideo, Don (Terri) of Alexandria, and Michelle (Ed) Terry of Plainview; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; sisters: Elaine DeSmith of Cottonwood, and Norma (Dick) Eiler of Bird Island; and many other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, son Mike, and a grandson Rick.
