Shirley Lorenz, age 94 of Walnut Grove, passed away peacefully with her daughters at her side on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Ivy Hill Senior Care Center in Faribault, MN. Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, July 12 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Walnut Grove. Visitation is 5:00-8:00 p.m. Friday at the Walnut Grove Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Burial is in the Walnut Grove Cemetery. Stephens Funeral Service – Walnut Grove Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Shirley Lillian (Anderson) Lorenz was born April 10, 1920 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Paul and Anna (Kronblod) Anderson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Shirley attended school at Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis. She helped care for and raise her younger siblings. Shirley started working at North Star in Minneapolis in 1942. On November 9, 1946 Shirley married Galen Lorenz in Minneapolis. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to Walnut Grove to farm with Galen’s father. They formed many neighbor friendships over the years that lasted a lifetime. Shirley was a member of Birthday Club, and stayed busy with those events, including a yearly fishing trip. She belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church where she was active in many ways, including Ladies’ Aid. She enjoyed quilting, bowling, and was an avid card player. Shirley lived at Country View for several years, and had recently moved to Ivy Hill to be closer to her daughters. She received outstanding care at both facilities.
Shirley is survived by her daughters Sandy Johnson of Warsaw and Dianna Meld of Anoka; grandchildren: Jay (Colleen) Johnson of Faribault, Jamie (Kathy) Johnson of Cottage Grove, Janell Johnson (Justin Johnson) of Madison, Gina Meld of Anoka, Brian (Christy) Meld of Andover, and Brandie Swenson of Storden; great-grandchildren: Marissa, Caitlyn, Tim, Emma, Sam, Taylor, Devon, Aaliyah, Peyton, and Jovianna. She is also survived by her siblings: Lois Etken, Audrey (Wayne) Goplen, Beverly Pulk, Kenny (Bobby) Anderson, and Jerry (Betty) Anderson; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Galen, son-in-law Jim Johnson, and sister Eleanor Strube.
